“Saving money as a stay at home mom” – Do you find yourself Pinteresting this phrase about saving money as much as I do? When I first became a stay at home mom, I would find myself feeling guilty that I get to stay home all day while my husband worked so hard to provide for us. Now that I have a few years of being a stay at home mom under my belt, I wouldn’t say that the guilt is gone forever, but I would say that I have learned how to contribute to our home more efficiently.
I got started with the idea of saving money as a way to contribute to our home one day when I was reading Proverbs 31. A wife of noble character focuses on ways she can save her family some expense. Particularly, Proverbs 31 points out that her dealings are profitable, she makes her family’s clothing and linens, and helps the poor.
Now, I am not that great with a sewing machine, although I did piece together our family’s Halloween costumes a couple of years ago (pic included just for fun!), but it got me thinking about how to make deals that are profitable within our home!
So, after some research on saving money, I decided to try extreme couponing. And do you know what I quickly realized? Extreme couponing is a LOT of flipping work! Not only would the piles of Sunday papers clutter up my kitchen table, but what mom truly has hours of free time each weekend to cut out coupons?!
Now, I know there are a ton of resources on making extreme couponing less overwhelming these days, but I just needed a simplistic way to save our family some money and a way to save me some stress.
I remembered an app I had downloaded for my mom to use when it first came out way back in the day. So I searched and searched and finally found it!
Insert the app of my dreams here.
iBotta became my best friend when it came to saving money. It was an app that I took with me to the grocery store, shopped for things on the list, scanned my receipt, and then waited for the notification that $3 (or more) was added to my account.
No coupon clipping, no paper buying, no cluttered kitchen table. Just an easy peasy way to start saving money as a stay at home mom.
If you’re a mom who wants to start saving money for her family while doing something you have to do every week anyway, keep on reading why I love iBotta!
- iBotta is an app on my phone!
Like I mentioned before, there’s no paper anything (except for the cash I withdraw from my account when I’ve saved some money!)
I don’t have to remember to bring the grocery list with me because it’s all right there in my tiny, handheld computer.
As stay at home moms, we thrive on EASY, and iBotta does such a good job at giving us just that!
- iBotta offers me rebates that I actually could use!
When I spent hours clipping coupons and paying for the papers that held those coupons, there would be so many that I wouldn’t even use by the time I got done. Sure, I got the paper with $200 worth of coupons in it, but realistically, I probably only actually saved $5-10 each week.
Each time I log into the app to start adding items to my list, I find myself using most of the offers listed more than not. This makes my time and effort with iBotta more profitable!
- iBotta loves to give out bonuses!
Each month you get the opporunity to add FREE cash to your account by completing certain tasks, such as, inviting friends to join with you (hello extra $5, jump right into my pocket!), purchasing certain item bundles (for example, the other week I purchased pancake mix + syrup and added an extra $1 to my account – on top of the savings for purchasing those two items separately!), and there’s even an option for you to complete certain offers outside of your regular grocery shopping to add more cash (like purchasing something on a website or buying a new pair of shoes).
My favorite of all bonuses, which as of writing this post they have one currently available, is the “Any Item” rebate. You’ll see an example of it below, but basically the Any Item rebate allows you to literally walk into the grocery store, pick up whatever you need, and cash in a rebate for as much as $1! No other purchases necessary!
This bonus is perfect for when I am missing that one ingredient for a recipe and it’s so random the thought of actually having a coupon for it is outside the realm of possibility.
There are so many other amazing things that I love about iBotta, but if I shared them all we would be here for a week. The best advice I can give you is just to try it out for yourself! See how much time and money you get to save by adding it to your grocery routine each week! You will be surprised!
Here’s a quick tutorial for using iBotta. Please note that these screenshots are from the web version of this app (your phone will look a little different, but still just as easy!) Personally, I like to add offers from the web, instead of searching through them on my tiny screen. 🙂
STEP 1: Get a bonus of $10 added to your account just for joining iBotta through my referral link! The $10 is added as soon as you redeem your first offer! Talk about saving money… it’s free!
STEP 2: Once you have your account settings established, now it’s time to start saving money! Click to find offers and search for the store you will be shopping from this week. As an example, I am choosing Food Lion (my go-to grocery store when I need last minute items).
STEP 3: Choose your offers! As an example, I am choosing my favorite bonus – the Any Item offer! You simply click on the offers that get you excited and they are automatically added to your list!
Sidenote: Most stores have rebate cards, make sure you add those to your account for additional savings! Likewise, for example, Food Lion’s rebates will be directly added to your card, so when you go back to the home screen and click “Redeem”, the barcode for your card will pop up. Simply scan that barcode at checkout and you won’t even have to mess with scanning in a receipt!
Not to mention, when you scan a card instead of a recipt to grab your savings, it’s approved almost instantly because… technology 🙂
STEP 4: When you’ve added all of the offers for that particular store, you can repeat the process at the next store you will be shopping from. Because let’s be honest, stay at home moms do not typically just get all of their grocery shopping done at one location 😉
Super simple, right?
So what are you waiting for, friend?
Even if you started an iBotta account a while back and never did anything with it, hopefully, this post inspired you to pick it back up! You can even create a new account, even if you already have one (just use a new email address), to take advantage of the FREE $10 by joining through my referral link!
Comment and tell me how saving money with iBotta could help your family!
